Baby Sign Language - Partially Forming Signs?

by Beth
(Louisiana)

For a sign requiring both hands, is it ok to sign it with only one hand without confusing my 4 month old daughter? For example, if I'm holding her because she is getting sleepy, can I make the sign for tired with my free hand, and have it mean the same to her as if I signed it with both hands?

Response from Baby Sign Language Team

Hi Beth,

Sure, in situations like this it is more than fine to use one hand while signing. The important thing is that your baby understands you and that you understand her.

Thank you very much for your question! Wishing you and your little one the best!

Happy Signing!
