Teaching your baby sign language doesn’t have to be complicated. Start with a few useful signs, practice them during everyday routines, and most importantly, have fun!
Here are five simple steps to help you get started.
1. Start Simple
Begin with signs your baby is likely to see and use every day. Try MILK, MORE, ALL DONE, BATH, SLEEP, and DIAPER. Choose just a few signs at first so you and your baby don’t feel overwhelmed. As your baby becomes comfortable, gradually add new signs.
2. Talk as You Sign
Always say the word while making the sign. For example, say “milk” while signing MILK or say “more” while signing MORE. Hearing the spoken word while seeing the sign helps connect the sign with its meaning and supports your baby’s developing spoken language.
3. Make Eye Contact
Whenever possible, get down to your baby’s level and make eye contact before signing. This helps your baby focus on what you are doing. Don’t worry if your baby doesn’t look at you every time—just keep offering the opportunity naturally.
4. Be Patient
Learning a new way to communicate takes time. Your baby may watch you sign for several weeks before attempting a sign. Give your baby plenty of opportunities to see and practice the signs without pressure. Every little attempt is progress!
5. Look Excited
Make signing fun! Smile, use an enthusiastic voice, and celebrate your baby’s efforts. Babies love positive attention, and your excitement can encourage them to try signing again. Remember, the goal is communication - not perfection.
Hope this gets you well on the road to learning and teaching your baby how to sign!
