Introducing baby sign language can be a fun and exciting way to connect with your little one. Before babies can clearly say the words they are thinking, they often understand much more than they can express. Simple signs can give them another way to communicate their wants, needs, and feelings.

Start With Everyday Words

Begin with a few simple signs that your baby will see and use regularly. MILK, MORE, EAT, ALL DONE, HELP, and SLEEP are wonderful first signs. You don't need to teach everything at once. Choose two or three signs and practice them consistently.

Sign While You Talk

Always say the word while making the sign. For example, when giving your baby a bottle, say “milk” and make the sign for MILK. When offering another bite of food, say “more” while making the MORE sign. Hearing the word while seeing the sign helps your baby make the connection between the gesture and its meaning.

Make It Part of Your Routine

You don't need formal lessons to teach baby sign language. Look for natural opportunities throughout your day. Sign BATH during bath time, BOOK when reading, and SLEEP during your bedtime routine. Repetition makes learning easier and helps signs become familiar.

Be Patient and Have Fun

Every baby learns at their own pace. Your little one may watch you sign for days or even weeks before attempting a sign. That's okay! Celebrate every effort and remember that your baby's version may look different from the adult sign at first.

Most importantly, keep talking, smiling, and interacting with your baby using signs. With patience and consistency, baby sign language can become a wonderful part of your everyday communication.
